Medical Self-care and Consumerism

Research indicates that as much as 30% of the money spent on healthcare goes to unnecessary or inappropriate services. With HWI's self-care and consumer education programs, participants will receive the information they need to take better care of themselves and make informed treatment decisions. Each of these programs teaches participants how to stay healthy and save money by properly navigating the healthcare system and practicing medical self-care.

 

  • Take ActionOnsite – This three-week program is comprised of two 60-minute workshops in weeks 1 and 3. In week 2, the participant uses their Take Action program booklet to read independently and complete learning activities. Instructors will lead participants through a variety of topics to illustrate: the importance of choosing a primary care doctor; how and when to utilize preventive medical services; and how to take care of their health now to avoid illness later in life.

 

  • Take Charge of Your HealthOnsite – This 60-minute workshop will lead participants through a number of real-life scenarios to illustrate: how and when to access emergency medical services; the importance of choosing a primary care doctor; and how to handle many common medical situations by practicing self-care. Each participant will also receive a copy of the Mayo Clinic Guide to Self-Care to take with them when they leave the Take Charge of Your Health workshop. This 300-page guide is packed with information on how to address many common ailments and injuries safely at home or at work.
